Peru - Project Conga of Yanacocha realizes Public hearing successfully
The hamlet of San Nicolás of Chalhuagón was the stage of a historical activity for the settlers of the hamlets of Huasmín, Sorochuco and The Ravine, of the provinces of Celendín and Cajamarca.
On Wednesday, the 31st of March 2010, there was realized the Public hearing that presented the results of the Study of Environmental Impact (EIA) of the Project Conga.
From 9 a.m. the delegations were coming from diverse forms, traveling, in vans and buses, some accompanied by his community authorities, others of his mayors and governing lieutenants. The stage was massive. It is anticipated that there were about 4.000 rural assistants, although they registered and 3,094 took part officially in the Hearing.
In the event, the diverse worries were answered by the technical staff of Yanacocha, who presented the principal characteristics of the Project Conga, and for the specialists of the international counsel in charge of the Study of Environmental Impact (EIA).

The hearing was presided by the representatives of the Department of Energy and Mines (MEM) and the Regional Direction of Energy and Mines of Cajamarca.
Once the remarks of the citizens have been gathered and the Department has approved this Project, one hopes that Yanacocha should decide to invest again in the Region in what would be one of the more important projects of copper and gold of Peru.
Héctor Araujo, governing lieutenant of the hamlet San Nicolás said that in his community they are sure that the mining brings development, but he is sorry that there are persons who look for personal benefits and try to stop the development from the social mining investment and ambientalmente responsible.
On having turned into mine, the Project Conga would mean between 800 to 1000 million dollars in privileges and mining canon for the region and the local governments of Cajamarca, along the life of the project.
