10. Theories of the motivation

Diversity of theories that focus attention on one or several of the aspects exists that comprise of the process of motivation of the workers. We develop most significant:

10.1. Theory of Maslow

Maslow established a series of needs undergone by the individual, giving origin to the call “pyramid of needs”. According to this theory, the satisfaction of the needs that are in a certain level takes to the following one in the hierarchy, nevertheless a level and another one occur to zones of coincidence between since a total satisfaction of the needs does not occur.

Maslow indicated five levels of needs at first it classified and them by importance order. In the base of the pyramid are the basic needs or primary, and in the peak those of psychological order or secondary.

When the vital needs have been covered, those are desires of each individual that will establish the order of needs and will even be able to modify the hierarchy over the years. At present, it counts on eight stages distributed in the same needs plus the one of transcendence in the vertex of the pyramid.

  • Basic needs. They are in the first level and its satisfaction is necessary to survive. They are the hunger, the thirst, the dress…
  • Needs of security. They are located in the second level, they are the security and physical protection, order, stability…
  • Social needs or of property. The social contacts and the economic life are related to. They are needs of property to groups, organizations…
  • Needs of estatus and prestige. Its satisfaction takes place when it increases the initiative, autonomy and responsibility of the individual. They are needs of respect, prestige, admiration, power…
  • Needs of autorrealización. They arise from the necessity to get to realize the system of values of each individual, that is to say of obtaining his principles personal aspirations.

10.2. Theory of the factors of Herzberg

Herzberg considers that two factors exist that explain the motivation of the workers in the company:

  • Motivating factors. They are those that determine the major or minor degree of satisfaction in the work and are related to the content of the work:

- The accomplishment of an interesting work.

- The profit.

- The responsibility.

- The recognition.

- The promotion.

- Et cetera.

These factors are those that move to the worker towards positive attitudes and to feel satisfaction.

  • Factors of hygiene. They are related to the work context and make reference to the treatment that the people receive in their work:

- The conditions of work.

- The pay.

- The human relations.

- The policy of the company.

- Et cetera.

When these factors have not been solved well produce dissatisfaction, but when it is tried to improve they do not manage them in case single to bring about the authentic satisfaction. In summary, the satisfaction is obtained by two types of factors that are independent and different dimension. On the other hand, all the factors are susceptible of a correct use on the part of the directors of the work parties.
